The Kayu Stays Up Late Because the Water's Good

Hello, sweetheart — it's Kayu Day, and I've been saving this one for you.

Kayu live in the densely forested mountains, where the height keeps the predators away, and they know exactly what that's worth. They're small, but they're stronger than they look and a good deal more cunning than they let on. And they spend all of it on nothing more pressing than honey and nuts, carried home to their own patch of territory with the satisfied air of somebody running errands they picked themselves.

Then, every so often, one turns up at a stream after dark, fishing for a midnight snack it doesn't remotely need. That's the bit that stays with me. Not survival — preference. A little creature with the whole mountain sorted out, sitting up late anyway because the water's good and the night is nice.
