The Haku Would Rather Be Near the Water

2026-08-07

Good evening, and happy Haku Day. If you're going looking for one tomorrow, a piece of advice from this desk: don't look up. Look for running water.

Haku are bright-scaled skycliff pets, and they keep to the aqueducts of Cloudloft and the windy ledges above the Reverie Steps. Small wings, a curled tail, a feathered crest — everything in the build says made for tight air currents, and they are. I've watched one thread a gap in a crosswind without appearing to give it much thought.

What stays with me is how seldom they bother. Ask a Haku to show you what it can do and it will decline. Leave it alone beside a waterwheel and it will happily stay there the rest of the afternoon. Three festivals and one memorable squirrel incident at this desk have taught me that the ones with nothing to prove are usually worth the longest look.

To mark the day: four stickers come to you as first-read rewards on this article, and four Haku Day keepsakes are out in the shops — the plushie, the tart, the balloon and the waterwheel keepsake, each in its own corner of town.
