What's the Meat?

Definitely a cursed question someone had to ask eventually: Where do the meats in the game come from?

Now, the last thing I want to assume is pets. This isn't Neopets, there's no Blumaroo steaks or Lupes eating Chia. But I want to bring up two points that confirm that it is meat and there are pets that eat meat.

    • The food Meat Kabob is labeled "Mmmm meat! This is not for vegetarians or those who want to lose weight. But its oh so good." Clear and simple: This is meat.
    • The book Nocturnal Requien Hunting is labeled "Discover the nocturnal hunting habits of the Requien," confirming that Requien well, hunt.

I also want to add that there's an item called the Prulen Burger that while it looks like a Prulen, reveals in its tooltip that the resemblance stops there: "This juicy burger resembles a Prulen, but we assure you it is NOT made of Prulen meat!"

So what are the meats? There is one item I've found that hints to a possibility, the Tentacle Steak, "The sea-dwelling creature from which the tentacle is obtained is subject to availability. Served with salad and fries, this meal is a favorite among pescetarians."

It appears there's animals in the world that ARE served as food. But what differentiates a pet from any other animal? If I had to guess it might be their intelligence given the responses pets have to items, but who knows?

    What do you think?

Seems to me like the same logic as to why we eat cows and pigs but not dogs or cats (in most sensible places).

I've noticed a lot of games that have an emphasis on animal companions seem to struggle with this. Your observations make me think of Pokemon, where earlier Pokedex entries wrote how some Pokemon would eat other Pokemon. Similarly, milk products come from Miltanks and Farfetch'ds are confirmed to be eaten by humans. My best guess is similar to your's, as in the meat in Aegis is predominately fish.

My other guess is that maybe the meat comes from the familars (the little creatures you can give to your pet). But the ones that have been found so far don't seem big enough to make a burger out of them.

    But I ain't got a hammer / And I ain't got a pencil / And I ain't got a lasso / So I'm doing it the hard way / Like a post post-modern man

In Flight Rising (another online pet game but just dragons) there is lore about the wildlife outside of the dragons and some of the creatures are food, some are familiars, some are neither and some are both. I kinda just assumed the meat comes from other animals that are not featured/ are less intelegent than the pets
