I think as long as you don't feed your pet the same color thing a bunch in a row you should be okay.

I don't believe there's currently a way to change your pets' species aside from the enchanted plushies, but I could be wrong.
Like what @rawr-y said, color changes can be avoided by feeding your pet a variety of food. However, if a color change happened on accident I feel it could be fixed. For an example, if you had a blue pet that turned green I assume feeding that pet predominately blue food items will make it revert back to that color.

The only pet I have at the moment is black
which was a special / limited color
Definitely watch what you feed them! But if the worst comes to pass - there could be another solution soon 🤔
