I'm not too terribly new, I joined back in August, but I've just finally gotten around to wanting to become active on the site!
I'm very lost as to what to do and I'm not sure how to get different pet colors or even earn money... Does anyone have any tips for a new member to get used to the site? Thanks everyone! :)

Hey there, welcome! :D If you're confused about colors, there are several guides on the top of the "General" section of the forum. They detail which foods promote specific color changes in pets.
SC (Money) can be obtained through games and requests. As of now, I recommend playing Elements and a few rounds of Trachops Fruity Treasures - I find these to be the quickest and easiest games on the site so far. Memory provides the most money of them all, but I personally find it time consuming. Cherry, the woman at the Soup Kitchen, often gives out a generous amount of SC daily. I reccommend getting some soup from her, she's very helpful to new members. I also feel that sending your pets to do requests is a great way to earn SC, however when a pet is completing a request they cannot be fed, played with or read to.

I just found out about gardening and just grew 2 blue apples. I'm not sure if the apples can be sold but it's fun aha! If I have anymore questions I'll be sure to ask! :)

Apples can be exchanged to get seed packets on the Mystic Grove page, so they can be kind of sold in a sense. :)
